In the words of the Apostle Paul to Timothy, it is written: "All scripture is divinely inspired, is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Timothy 3.16 to 17).Chair of the Scriptures of the Old Testament can be summarized within the same of Paul's words.

Scientific-educational unit of the Department of the Old Testament is based on the introduction to the "whole of Scripture", with the aim that every student and the student who engages in studying the Bible and theology as such, whose truths emerge and are based on biblical foundations, gather and learn basicinformation and explanations associated with the Bible.What was revealed Word of God to people, students in the first year of study introduces the formation of Scripture in its historical and geographical circumstances, explains the inspiration of Scripture, canon of books of the Bible that it is possible to understand and convey the meaning and message of Scripture to others (so that it realizes its educationalbenefit).

The content of other research and teaching units in the department of St.Scriptures of the Old Testament is essentially determined by the canonical and deutero writings of the Old Testament.In a special introduction to a larger group of Old Testament scriptures (the Pentateuch, historical books, sapiential writings, prophetic literature), to the application of any synchronic diachronic any exegetical method, students are introduced to the proper interpretation of biblical texts, not only in their entirety, but also individually.Students are approaching the matter with the help of lectures, exercises and seminars as well as modern technical aids.Besides exegetical approach Old Testament texts, students for the synthesis of the entire Old Testament offered a course of biblical theology of the Old Testament in which it handled the most important biblical themes, as a synthesis of the Old Testament theological thought: God, man and the world, about their relationship, about eschatology, messianism, etc..

The approach to the biblical text is inevitably at least a basic knowledge of biblical languages: Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek;because the very philological analysis is the first step towards a better understanding of the text itself.

Chair of the Scriptures of the Old Testament is primarily directed to the study of biblical texts and feel closer to the prophetic proclamation of universal Redeemer (cf. DV 15), because the books of the Old Testament show their full meaning in the New Testament (DV 16).Hereby, the courses of the Department of the Old Testament kind of approach and promote other theological subjects, especially dogmatic theology.Chair of the Scriptures of the Old Testament wants students to illuminate the famous phrase of St.Jerome: "Ignoratio one Scripturarum ignoratio Christiest" (PL 38,966).

 

Compulsory courses:

1. Hebrew (Hebrew acquire the basics of graphics and phonetics, morphology and basic syntactic issues. They read a selected biblical passages);

2. General Introduction to the Bible (the acquisition of the fundamental concepts for the understanding of Scripture and knowledge necessary for the proper understanding of the biblical world, with fundamental questions about the origin and content of the Bible, the students are introduced to biblical geography and archeology)

3. Introduction and exegesis of the OT, I .: The Pentateuch and the historical books (familiar environment in which to place povijestStarog Testament, and information about the origins and fundamental theological porucinavedenih writings of the Pentateuch to the historical writings with exegesis of selected texts)

4. Introduction and exegesis of the OT, II .: The prophets and wisdom literature (after the panoramic views of each of the prophetic / mudrosneknjige exegesis important theological texts from certain prophetic / wisdom books)

5. Biblical Theology of the Old Testament (recapitulation and synthesis of matter that has so far dealt with in the Old Testament courses; historical overview of Biblical Theology; introduction to the Semitic way of thinking; theology deals with big themes OT)
